3rd Friday of Lent – Way of the Cross

A World at War – Lord, Teach Us Peace

In a world wounded by war and conflict, this 3rd Friday of Lent Way of the Cross invites us to walk with Jesus through His suffering and reflect on the pain experienced by humanity today. This meditation connects Christ’s Passion with the suffering of nations and calls us to pray for peace, justice, and reconciliation.

The Stations of the Cross are a powerful Catholic devotion that helps us walk spiritually with Christ during His Passion.

Station 1 – Jesus is Condemned to Death

Station 1 – Jesus is condemned to death by Pontius Pilate while the crowd watches in Jerusalem

Scripture

“Pilate said to them, ‘What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?’ They all said, ‘Let him be crucified.’”

Reference

Matthew 27:22 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Lord Jesus, the crowd demanded Your death even though You were innocent.
Fear, anger, and political pressure overcame truth and justice.

Today our world repeats the same tragedy.
Nations accuse, leaders condemn, and innocent people suffer because of the decisions of the powerful.

War often begins not with weapons, but with hearts that refuse mercy and truth.

Your condemnation reminds us that injustice still walks through the streets of our world.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, when power is used without wisdom and justice, the innocent suffer.
Touch the hearts of world leaders and guide them toward peace instead of destruction.

Station 2 -Jesus Takes Up His Cross

Station 2 – Jesus accepts and carries the wooden cross as Roman soldiers prepare Him for the journey to Calvary

Scripture

“So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull.”

Reference

John 19:17 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Jesus, You carried the cross that humanity placed upon You.

Today millions carry crosses they did not choose—
families forced to flee their homes,
children growing up under the sound of bombs,
communities destroyed by conflict.

The cross You carried became the symbol of love that refuses to abandon the world.

Prayer

Lord, strengthen those who carry heavy burdens because of war and violence.

Station 3 -Jesus Falls the First Time

Station 3 – Jesus falls to the ground for the first time under the heavy cross on the road to Calvary

Scripture

“He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.”

Reference

Isaiah 53:5 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Jesus, the weight of the cross caused You to fall.

Humanity also falls again and again into hatred, revenge, and division.

Despite centuries of suffering, the world still struggles to learn the lesson of peace.

Your fall reveals the heavy consequences of sin that weighs upon humanity.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, lift our fallen world and teach us the path of reconciliation.

Station 4 -Jesus Meets His Mother

Station 4 – Jesus meets His sorrowful mother Mary while carrying the cross toward Calvary

Scripture

“And a sword will pierce through your own soul also.”

Reference

Luke 2:35 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Mary stood silently as she saw her Son suffer.

Across the world today, countless mothers experience the same sorrow—
watching their children wounded, lost, or taken by war.

The suffering of Mary reminds us that war does not only destroy cities; it breaks the hearts of families.

Prayer

Mother Mary, comfort every mother who mourns and intercede for peace in the world.

Station 5 -Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross

Station 5 – Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross along the road to Golgotha

Scripture

“And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene… to carry his cross.”

Reference

Mark 15:21 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Simon did not expect to carry the cross, yet he became part of Christ’s journey.

In times of war, many ordinary people become instruments of compassion—
doctors, volunteers, and strangers who help the wounded and protect the vulnerable.

God often works through unexpected people to bring hope in moments of suffering.

Prayer

Lord, help us never remain indifferent to the suffering of others.

Station 6 -Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

Station 6 – Veronica compassionately wipes the face of Jesus as He carries the cross

Scripture

“As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

Reference

Matthew 25:40 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

In the middle of cruelty, Veronica showed compassion.

Even in the darkest moments of history, small acts of kindness reveal the presence of God.

A gesture of mercy can restore dignity to those whose lives have been shattered by violence.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, teach us to recognize Your face in every suffering person.

Station 7 -Jesus Falls the Second Time

Station 7 – Jesus falls for the second time under the weight of the cross on the way to Calvary

Scripture

“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.”

Reference

Isaiah 53:7 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Jesus falls again under the burden of the cross.

Human history also repeats the same cycle of violence.

Wars continue across generations because hatred is passed from one heart to another.

Your silent suffering invites us to break this cycle with forgiveness.

Prayer

Lord, heal the wounds that lead nations into endless conflict.

Station 8 -Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

Station 8 – Jesus speaks to the women of Jerusalem who weep as He carries the cross

Scripture

“Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.”

Reference

Luke 23:28 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Jesus looked beyond His own suffering and warned about the future.

War steals the future of children.

Many grow up surrounded by fear instead of hope.

Christ calls us to care about the generations that will inherit the consequences of today’s choices.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, protect children living in places of conflict.

Station 9-Jesus Falls the Third Time

Station 9 – Jesus falls the third time under the weight of the cross near Calvary

Scripture

“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.”

Reference

Psalm 22:14 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

The third fall shows the extreme weakness of Christ’s human body.

Humanity often reaches this same point of exhaustion—
when violence leaves nations broken and societies wounded.

Yet even in weakness, Christ continues forward.

Prayer

Lord, when the world feels hopeless, remind us that Your love is stronger than violence.

Station 10 -Jesus is Stripped of His Garments

Station 10 – Jesus is stripped of His garments by Roman soldiers before the crucifixion at Calvary

Scripture

“And they divided his garments among them, casting lots for them.”

Reference

Mark 15:24 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Jesus was stripped of dignity before being crucified.

War also strips people of dignity—
homes destroyed, identities lost, lives reduced to survival.

Yet even in humiliation, Christ reveals the dignity of every human person.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, restore dignity to those who have lost everything.

Station 11 -Jesus is Nailed to the Cross

Station 11 – Jesus is nailed to the wooden cross by Roman soldiers at Golgotha

Scripture

“And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him.”

Reference

Luke 23:33 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

Nails pierced the hands that healed the sick and blessed the children.

Violence often destroys what is good and innocent.

The crucifixion reminds us that hatred can wound even the most loving hearts.

Yet the Cross also becomes the place where love conquers evil.

Prayer

Lord, transform the violence of the world through the power of Your love.

Station 12 -Jesus Dies on the Cross

Station 12 – Jesus dies on the cross at Calvary as the sky darkens and His followers mourn

Scripture

“Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!’”

Reference

Luke 23:46 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

At the moment of death, Jesus entrusted everything to the Father.

In the midst of suffering and destruction, Christ offers the world a new beginning through sacrifice.

His death reveals that love is stronger than death.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, bring peace to every nation wounded by war.

Station 13 – Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross

Station 13 – The body of Jesus is taken down from the cross and placed in the arms of His mother Mary

Scripture

“Joseph of Arimathea… took away his body.”

Reference

John 19:38 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

The lifeless body of Jesus was placed into loving hands.

After war, many families carry the grief of loss.

The sorrow of Mary holding Jesus reminds us that God understands human suffering.

Prayer

Lord, comfort those who mourn loved ones lost to violence.

Station 14 -Jesus is Laid in the Tomb

Station 14 – Jesus is laid in the tomb as His followers prepare His body for burial

Scripture

“They laid him in a tomb cut in stone.”

Reference

Luke 23:53 (RSV-CE)

Meditation

The tomb seems like the end of hope.

Yet within that silence, God prepares the miracle of resurrection.

Even in a world filled with war, Christ promises that peace and new life can rise again.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, from the darkness of suffering bring the light of peace to our world.

During Lent, many faithful pray the Stations of the Cross to meditate on the suffering and love of Jesus.
