⛰️ On the Mountain with Christ – 2nd Sunday of Lent Reflection

This 2nd Sunday of Lent Reflection invites us to journey from the wilderness to the mountain of revelation.

👉 Last week’s reflection — Into the Desert with Christ – 1st Sunday of Lent Reflection — invited us into the wilderness where Lent begins.

After the desert…

comes the mountain.

After temptation…

comes revelation.

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John
up a high mountain —
away from noise,
away from crowds,
away from distraction.

And there…

He is transfigured.

God Gives Light Before the Cross

Lent is not a journey of darkness alone.

Before the suffering intensifies,
before the road to Calvary unfolds,

God allows the disciples to see:

✔ The glory of Christ
✔ The truth beyond the Cross
✔ The hope hidden inside sacrifice

They are not meant to understand everything yet.

But they are meant to remember this moment
when the shadow of the Cross arrives.

The Voice from the Cloud

From the cloud comes a voice:

“This is my beloved Son… listen to Him.”

Not admire Him.

Not analyse Him.

Not debate Him.

But:

Listen.

Lent invites us to reduce the noise of the world
so we can hear the voice that truly matters.

The Desire to Stay

Peter says:

“Lord, it is good that we are here.”

Disciples witnessing Christ’s glory on the mountain

He wants to remain on the mountain.

We understand this.

We too want:

✔ Spiritual comfort
✔ Moments of clarity
✔ Peace without struggle

But the Christian journey does not end in light.

It passes through sacrifice.

The mountain is not the destination.

It is preparation.

Why the Transfiguration Matters

Soon the disciples will see:

  • Jesus rejected
  • Jesus suffering
  • Jesus crucified

And in those moments of confusion,

this memory will speak:

The One who suffers
is the One who is glorious.

The One who is rejected
is the beloved Son.

Our Own Mountains

God also gives us moments of transfiguration:

Prayerful reflection in the light of spiritual revelation

A deep prayer
A silent peace
An unexpected answer
A renewed strength

Not to escape life…

But to face it.

Not to avoid suffering…

But to walk through it.

Why the Church Gives Us This Gospel

The Transfiguration is not placed in Lent by accident.

At the beginning of our Lenten journey,
the Church reminds us:

Suffering is never the final word.

Before we walk toward:

  • sacrifice
  • surrender
  • repentance

we are shown:

  • glory
  • identity
  • hope

The disciples did not yet understand the Cross.

But they were given a memory
that would sustain them through it.

In the same way,

Lent gives us moments of light
so that when we face:

  • struggles
  • doubts
  • spiritual dryness

we remember:

God has already revealed His presence.

The Mountain Is Not Escape

The Transfiguration was not meant
to remove the disciples from reality.

It was meant to prepare them for it.

Soon they would witness:

  • rejection
  • suffering
  • confusion
  • fear

Without this moment of light,
the Cross would feel like defeat.

But because of this revelation,
they could later understand:

Glory and suffering are not opposites.

They are part of the same journey.

Lent teaches us that faith
is not strengthened only in comfort,
but also in trust when clarity fades.

Listening Changes the Journey

Lent invites us to reduce the noise of the world so we can hear the voice that truly matters.

👉 This deeper listening is part of understanding What Lent is and Why It Matters.

The Father did not say:

“Admire Him.”

He said:

“Listen to Him.”

Listening requires surrender.

It means:

  • letting go of control
  • trusting beyond understanding
  • following even without certainty

Lent invites us to move
from admiration to obedience.

Not just to feel inspired —
but to be transformed.

👉 Many families continue this Lenten journey through the Stations of the Cross for Families – 2nd Friday Lenten Devotion.

Reflection Question

Are you trying to stay on the mountain?

Or are you allowing God’s light
to strengthen you for the journey ahead?

Prayer

Lord,

When I experience Your light,
help me not cling to comfort.

When the road becomes difficult,
remind me of the moments
You have already revealed Yourself to me.

Teach me to listen to Your Son
and walk faithfully
from the mountain
toward the Cross.

Amen.
