The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano
Introduction
The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano is one of the oldest and most well-known Eucharistic miracles in the history of the Catholic Church. It occurred in the city of Lanciano in Italy during the 8th century and remains a powerful sign pointing to the Church’s teaching on the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.
For more than twelve centuries, the miraculous relics have been preserved and venerated by the faithful, drawing pilgrims from around the world.

The Miracle
According to historical accounts, a Basilian monk was celebrating Holy Mass in the Church of Saint Legontian in Lanciano. The monk struggled with doubts about whether Jesus was truly present in the Eucharist.
During the consecration, when the priest pronounced the words of Christ over the bread and wine, something extraordinary happened.
The consecrated host visibly changed into living flesh, and the wine changed into real blood.
The blood coagulated into five irregular clots, which can still be seen today. This event strengthened the faith of the monk and those present at the Mass.
The relics were preserved and eventually placed in a shrine where they continue to be venerated.
Scientific Examination
In 1970–1971, the relics were scientifically examined by Professor Odoardo Linoli, a professor of anatomy and pathological histology.
The scientific analysis produced remarkable findings:

- The Flesh is real human flesh.
- The Blood is real human blood.
- The Flesh consists of muscular tissue from the human heart.
- The Blood type was identified as AB.
Despite being preserved for more than twelve centuries, the relics remain intact without the use of preservatives, which scientists consider extraordinary.
The Relics Today
Today, the miraculous Flesh and Blood are preserved in the Sanctuary of the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano in Italy.
The Flesh appears as a circular piece similar in size to the Eucharistic host used during Mass, while the Blood is preserved as five coagulated clots.
Thousands of pilgrims visit the sanctuary each year to pray and reflect on the mystery of the Eucharist.
Biblical Foundation
The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, a truth revealed in Sacred Scripture.
John 6:51 (RSV-CE)
“I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
Through the Eucharist, the faithful receive the Body and Blood of Christ, the source and summit of Christian life.
A Sign That Strengthens Faith
Eucharistic miracles like the one at Lanciano do not replace faith but serve as signs that strengthen belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.
They remind the faithful of the profound mystery celebrated at every Mass.
The Significance of the Miracle
The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano remains one of the most powerful signs of the Church’s belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.
For centuries, pilgrims, theologians, and scientists have reflected on this extraordinary event. While faith in the Eucharist is rooted in the words of Christ and the teaching of the Church, miracles such as Lanciano serve as visible reminders of this sacred mystery.
The miracle continues to inspire devotion and strengthen the faith of countless believers who visit the sanctuary in Lanciano each year.
